We consistently host free labs and workshops in Montreal and Toronto, available to all local aspiring music creators, producers, and sound engineers.

Music Creation

Montreal - Thursday, March 21st @ 7:00pm

Toronto - Wednesday, March 20th @ 7:00pm

The point of music creation is to communicate emotion. This process starts by generating sounds, and creating hooks using those sounds (including lyrics, chords, melodies, rhythms, and grooves); but there's a lot more to the music creation process than that. Composition, building arrangements, and structuring arrangements into complete musical pieces (specifically, commercial songs) are fundamental to communicating emotion in an effective and catchy manner. This workshop was designed to help you systematically turn musical ideas - emotions, sounds, and hooks - into complete songs.

Show up between 6:30-7:00pm for a pre-workshop tour. The workshop itself starts at 7:00pm sharp.

Late entries will not be accepted.

  1. Watch and learn as RAC’s most prolific music creators demonstrate the RAC approach to song creation, and how you can implement parts of the system (or the whole thing) into your own productions.
  2. Take a crack at the project yourself in RAC’s music computer lab immediately after the workshop and get feedback from RAC mentors.
  3. Take the project home to practice using the RAC music creation system using your own musical ideas, then submit your work for professional feedback.

Home Studio

Montreal - TBD

Toronto - TBD

Gone are the days when music creators and recording engineers were two separate roles. Music creation tools have never been more accessible, and just look at how that's affected the industry: you'd be hard-pressed to find a music creator that doesn't have some sort of home-studio setup. As a result, your sound—and the environment in which you capture and refine that sound—is all the more important to your final product than it ever was before.

This workshop is for music creators that recognize having a solid home studio is a key to developing a unique and competitive sound. In this two-hour workshop, we'll cover all the factors that are likely limiting your home studio and look at several key ways you can drastically improve your setup both acoustically and in terms of your workflow. You'll leave the event with a checklist of items you can implement pretty much immediately and notice a drastic hike in your critical listening and production chops.

Show up between 6:30-7:00pm for a pre-workshop tour. The workshop itself starts at 7:00pm sharp.

Late entries will not be accepted.

  1. Watch and learn as RAC’s acoustics experts walk you through the basics of sound and the common acoustic problems that are likely to impact your home setup.
  2. Identify the problems facing your environment and start planning how to reduce or eliminate them, using the methods demonstrated earlier.
  3. Take your project home to implement your changes and enjoy the immediate benefit of an acoustically superior work environment.

Sound Design

Montreal - Thursday, March 7th @ 7:00pm

Toronto - Wednesday, March 6th @ 7:00pm

There are a lot of factors that contribute to success, but one thing every great producer, artist, engineer, film composer and studio pro has in common is great sound. Sound design is one of the most influential ways to carve out a distinct sound. By sound design, we’re referring to building a one-of-a-kind sound though i) recording, ii) sampling, iii) processing, iv) mapping, and more. If you’re looking for ways to drastically improve your music creation and sound design skills, RAC's systematic approach to sound design will give you a solid foundation to build from. And it’s free to active sound music creators.

Show up between 6:30-7:00pm for a pre-workshop tour. The workshop itself starts at 7:00pm sharp.

Late entries will not be accepted.

  1. Watch and learn as RAC’s sound design experts walk you through recording live drums and creating a custom virtual drum kit from start to finish. As always, the approaches and treatments are used by Grammy winning studio engineers on the RAC team.
  2. Take a crack at the project yourself in RAC’s music computer lab immediately after the workshop and get feedback from RAC mentors.
  3. Take the project home to practice some of the approaches and techniques shared the workshop. We believe that practice makes perfect, and it doesn’t hurt to have an expert showing the tricks of the trade.

Mixing

Montreal - Thursday, March 14th @ 7:00pm

Toronto - Tuesday, March 12th @ 7:00pm

If we follow the notion that sound design is about distinguishing yourself creatively, and music creation is about communicating emotions effectively, then mixing is about producing competitive products. Like all our workshops, the Mixing Workshop introduces our systematic approach to mixing to help you stay organized and efficient as you turn your distinguished sound and musical ideas into a finished product ready to hit the airwaves.

Show up between 6:30-7:00pm for a pre-workshop tour. The workshop itself starts at 7:00pm sharp.

Late entries will not be accepted.

  1. Watch and learn as we walk you through a song mix from start to finish and shares valuable approaches and treatments shared by Grammy winning studio engineers.
  2. Take a crack at the mix yourself in our computer lab and get feedback from RAC mentors on your work.
  3. Take the project home to practice some of the approaches and techniques shared at the workshop. We believe that practice makes perfect, and it doesn’t hurt to have an expert showing the tricks of the trade.
