Mat Afrakite debuts solo career with single, "Grown Apart"

Song: “Grown Apart”

Artist: Afrakite

Mat Afrakite is a local 25-year-old multi-instrumentalist, drummer for Montreal’s Elliot Maginot, member of Backyard Dreaming, and, as of recently, singer-songwriter in a solo project called Afrakite.
An Ottawa, Ontario native, Afrakite grew up a piano student in a small town called Aylmer (now part of the City of Gatineau). His pallet diversified when he took interest in drumming and guitar, and again when he decided to study audio engineering.

It was during his time as an audio engineering student that his passion for music was bolstered.

“I got very focused and consumed by music. I wanted to get really good and I knew it was going to take up a lot of my time, but that's what I thought it took and I did it.”

Afrakite moved to Montreal two years ago in pursuit of a more fruitful music scene, hoping to tap into one of the world’s most actively yielding indie music hubs. He’s since been involved with two local acts in Elliot Maginot and Backyard Dreaming, and his experience as a growing musician helped form the basis for his recent debut solo release, “Grown Apart”.

“About a year after I moved to Montreal I realized how much I had really drifted from my relationships and isolated myself. The thought of how much we all may sacrifice to try and get where we want in our careers was what I wrote ‘Grown Apart’ about.”

A minimalistic, melancholy indie track, “Grown Apart” is the first of several songs Afrakite hopes to release within the next few months as part of his home-studio-based project.

Have a listen to “Grown Apart” here, and stay tuned for more releases from Afrakite in the near future!
